Asphalt patching is the targeted removal and replacement of a failed pavement area. It is appropriate when damage is concentrated—such as a settled utility cut, broken edge, localized alligator cracking, or a section weakened by water—while surrounding pavement still has useful life.

The visible crack pattern is only the starting point. A lasting patch depends on reaching sound pavement at the perimeter, removing loose material, evaluating the supporting base, restoring grade where practical, bonding the repair edges, and compacting the new asphalt. Simply placing material over a moving or saturated area can make a defect look better temporarily without correcting why it failed.

Common problems

Interconnected cracking often indicates movement or loss of support beneath the asphalt. A full-depth patch can expose and address the affected base.
A repair can sink when trench backfill or base was not compacted adequately. The failed material should be removed before rebuilding the transition.
Traffic close to an unconfined edge can crack asphalt and push the shoulder away. Edge support and water flow should be considered with the patch.
Ponding and water entry can soften aggregate and accelerate cracking. A patch may restore surface grade, but broader drainage defects must be identified separately.
